Frequently asked questions
Do I count the top landing?
Yes. The top landing acts as one extra tread, so measure its depth and width and add it as an additional step. If the landing is much larger than a standard tread, calculate its square footage separately (length × width ÷ 144) and add it to your total.
What is stair nosing?
Nosing is the rounded front edge of each tread — it can be a separate trim piece or part of a stair tread. The linear footage result tells you how much nosing trim to buy: one stair-width length per step.
Tread vs riser — what's the difference?
The tread is the flat, horizontal part you step on. The riser is the vertical board between treads. Both get covered in most flooring installations, which is why this calculator adds them together per step.
Can I share my result with my contractor?
Yes — use the Copy results button to paste the full breakdown into an email or message, or Share to send it straight from your phone. Print gives you a clean page with just the numbers.
