How much extra tile should I buy for cuts and waste?
Buy 10% extra for straight layouts. For diagonal or herringbone patterns, plan 15% waste because cuts produce more offcuts. This calculator applies your waste percentage to tiles, grout, and thinset.
Should I use sanded or unsanded grout?
Use unsanded grout for joints 1/8" or narrower — it won’t scratch polished tile. Use sanded grout for joints wider than 1/8", where the sand resists shrinkage and cracking. Coverage per bag is similar for the same tile and joint combination.
Does grout joint width change how much grout I need?
Yes, significantly. Doubling the joint width roughly doubles the grout needed for the same tile size. The coverage table in this calculator shows square feet per bag dropping as joints get wider.
