Frequently asked questions
What is waste % and why 7–10%?
Waste % covers planks or tiles lost to cuts, pattern matching, and damaged pieces. For a simple rectangular room, 7–10% is standard. For diagonal layouts, rooms with many angles, or large-format tile, use 10–15%. A little extra also leaves you spares for future repairs.
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Divide the room into two rectangles, measure each length × width, then add the two areas together. Enter that total as your room size — or run this calculator once per rectangle and add the box counts.
Does this work for tile (boxes vs pieces)?
Yes. Enter the box coverage in square feet as printed on the tile box (total area all pieces in the box cover). The calculator rounds up to whole boxes, since you can't buy a partial box.
Should I buy extra beyond the waste %?
One extra box beyond the calculation is wise if your flooring line is being discontinued or dye lots vary. Store leftover planks flat in a climate-controlled space — they're a lifesaver for repairs years later.
